The West Coast – Stunning beaches, coastal towns and panoramic green scenery

Having previously looked at the Monchique area, we now explore the attractions of the Algarve's West Coast, including its locally sourced cuisine and spectacular environment.

Tuesday, 10 March 2020 - Algarve

Here, we take a look at the towns and coastline along the West Coast of the Algarve. We have a number of properties in this area, most of them with easy access to unspoilt beaches and wide-open countryside.

The West Coast's history begins at the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe, Sagres, the departure point for the Portuguese navigators exploring most of the globe's continents centuries ago. The area is also known for welcoming explorers and visitors, both in the past and the present.

Known as the Costa Vicentina, a large proportion of the region is protected natural reserve. This has allowed for wildlife, in particular birds, to be able to prosper in the area. The land between the sea and the hills is shared between forest and agriculture, one of the principal crops grown being the sweet potato. We covered the festival in Aljezur in an earlier article on our website:

Heading north from Sagres, we arrive at the village of Carrapateira, which provides the closest access to the first of our beaches, the Praia da Bordeira. The beach is within walking distance of the town, its cafés and restaurants and is also a soughtafter location for surfers, as with all the coastline, including Amoreira near Aljezur, displayed here and in our video clip.

Further on, we arrive in the historic town of Aljezur, split into two based on the presence of its two churches, one of which, Igrega Nova, is host to the town square with quality cafés and restaurants offering both local and international cuisine. Local markets are found across the town offering fresh produce from both the land and the sea, as well as everything that you may require for growing your own at home!

Continuing further north, we pass through the smaller towns of Rogil and Odeceixe. Both offer access to smaller, but more varied beaches. Each of the towns mentioned in this article offer enough amenities for basic shopping, banking etc.
